Tigers Take C2BL Title
Top-Ranked Napavine Holds Off Mossyrock 41-36
Posted Tue, Feb 10, 2009 - 10:04 am . By The Chronicle
NAPAVINE -- No. 1-ranked Napavine sewed up the Central 2B League girls basketball championship with a hard-fought victory over Mossyrock here Monday night 41-36.
The Tigers are 17-0 in league play and 19-0 overall. A win over Morton Thursday would complete an unbeaten regular season. Mossy is now tied with White Pass for second place at 12-3.
"This was a great, great game," said Napavine coach Shane Schutz. "Mossyrock came ready to play and they got after us."
This one was tight the whole way.
Napavine led by one after one quarter (7-6) and had the same advantage at halftime (16-15). It was a three-point game after three (28-25).
"It was two or three points the whole way," Schutz said. "In the third and fourth quarters we did a good job of doing the little things -- rebounding, forcing them into shots they might not be comfortable with."
Napavine got into some early foul trouble and also had a tough time putting the ball in the basket all night (26 percent). Both teams combined for 37 turnovers.
"We missed some shots, but you have to credit Mossyrock for a lot of that," Schutz said. "We bent, but we didn't break."
Ali Brossard led Napavine with 15 points. The sophomore also had nine rebounds. Kristen Lantau added 10 points and nine boards.
Mossyrock was led by the 11 points of Claire Swayze while Julianne McCurry had 10.
Schutz said it was a perfect matchup for the upcoming district tournament.
"We needed a game like this," he said. "You need to face some adversity so you know how to handle it when you get to district. We haven't played exceptionally well the last few games. A lot of that is due to who we are playing and how they are preparing for us. The kids didn't back down."
Napavine rarely does at home as the Tigers now have won 32 straight home games. This was the fifth of six straight home games.
The Tigers close out the regular season with Morton Thursday while Mossyrock hosts Adna Wednesday.
Trojans Win On Senior Night
Pe Ell -- The Pe Ell Trojans had no problem taking care of the Columbia Adventist Kodiaks, 75-33, on senior night here Monday in C2BL action.
It was a great night for the Trojans four seniors -- Katie Bateman, Kayla Reynolds, Stephanie Parcel and Kendra Henry. Bateman led all scores with with 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists.
"We had a pretty balance scoring night all around," said Pe Ell coach Dawna Robinson. "We started our four seniors and they did a pretty good job of getting things going for us early."
With the game being so lop-sided, the Trojans were able to play man defense the entire night.
"This was a good night for us to work on our man defense. We need to get better at that," said Robinson.
The win keeps the Trojans hopes alive for a birth in the district tournament. Pe Ell (7-10 in league) must win out to keep that hope alive.
Next for Pe Ell is a rematch with the Kodiaks at Columbia Adventist on Wednesday.

Raymond beat North Beach last night 41-37. It was their 11th straight win and their 4th straight pacific league title. They seem to be struggling against much weeker teams of late. Not sure what's going on but their not playing at the level that's going to get them to Spokane.

Raymond beat South Bend by two, or so I heard. Again, Raymond barely beats an average at best team. Haven't been to one of their games for a while so I'm not sure what's going on with them but it's not looking good. Sooner or later one of these .500 teams is going to beat them by two and they'll be done.

MOSSYROCK --€¯Coming off a tight loss at No. 1 Napavine, Mossyrock started with the same energy Wednesday night against Adna.
The Vikings built a 28-9 lead at halftime and posted a 52-30 Central 2B League girls basketball victory.
"I think we took Adna a little by surprise with our intensity level,"€¯said Mossyrock coach Fred Hendricks. "We came out with the same enthusiasm that we had at Napavine."
Elena Belcher tossed in 16 points to lead the Vikings while Claire Swayze and Julianne McCurry had 10 apiece.
"Belcher had a real good game tonight (six blocks and seven rebounds),"€¯Hendricks said. "And McCurry has been scoring in double figures the last few games. She really gives us another weapon when district comes around."
The Viking coach was impressed with the way Adna battled in the second half.
"Give Adna a lot of credit. They adjusted to our pressure in the second half and it was a three-point difference," Hendricks said. "Jeff (Beasley) did a nice job of getting his kids refocused and they played a real good game in the second half."
Jordan Zurfluh led the Pirates with eight points, but Adna had a tough night shooting overall. Adna was just 11 of 61 (18 percent) from the field.
It was the final home game for Mossy seniors Hannah Pomeroy and Belcher. The Vikings were scheduled to host Columbia Adventist Saturday, but the Kodiaks have forfeited that game. Mossy does play the Kodiaks tonight in Battle Ground.
Mossy is 13-3 (14-4 overall) and tied for second in the C2BL. Adna is now 7-9 in league play.
Trojans Tune Up for District
BATTLE GROUND -- Pe Ell got off to a quick start and was able to do a little early preparation for the upcoming District IV Class 2B Tournament with a 38-21 C2BL victory over Columbia Adventist.
The victory concludes the regular season for the Trojans, who finish 8-10 in league and 9-11 overall. Pe Ell will finish either sixth or seventh in league.
Pe Ell broke out to a 16-4 lead after one quarter and was never headed.
"It was nice to get off to a quick start and we were able to play everybody," said Pe Ell coach Dawna Robinson. "We were able to work on our man-to-man defense and do a lot of things to get ready for district.
"We didn't score a lot of points tonight, but we did play more disciplined and it was a good team effort."
Kaytie Bateman led the Trojans with 12 points while Karly Bateman added nine.
The Trojans will open district play Monday, but their foe and site of the game is yet to be determined.

I hope someone who knows will post info on Hahn's condition. She came out in the second half with a knee wrap but only sat on the bench.
YAKIMA, Wash. — Losing at home is something that no current La Salle girls basketball player knows anything about — and they weren’t about to experience it for the time on senior night Saturday at Queen Gym.
Katie Vickers nailed four 3-pointers to spark a La Salle surge midway through the game, and the Lightning went on to post a 58-43 victory over Riverside Christian, which lost standout Madison Hahn to injury.
“We have not lost on our home court in five years, so our kids take a lot of pride in winning here,” La Salle coach Alyssa Goins said of the winning streak. “This was a good way to end the regular season.”
La Salle, the defending Class 2B state champion, completed a perfect run through the Mid-Valley 2B League, finishing 6-0. The Lightning are 16-4 overall.
La Salle opens district play either Friday or Saturday against Lyle.
“We’re starting to come together at the right time,” Goins said.
Saturday, La Salle got key contributions from several players throughout the game to pull away.
Alicia Ashby led the way with 16 points, Vickers had 12, and Savannah Bonny added 11.
“Savannah Bonny knocked down some shots for us early when we were having trouble getting into the flow of the game,” Goins said. “Katie Vickers hit four big 3-pointers in the middle of the game to give us some breathing room, and Alicia Ashby was gave us a big emotional spark.”
But perhaps the biggest turning point came late in the first half when Hahn, Riverside Christian’s leading scorer at 19.9 points per game, went down with what Goins said was a knee injury.
“That was pretty devastating for them. That changed the complexion of the game,” Goins said, noting that La Salle led just 22-20 at the time. “It took Riverside time to recover, but they did and battled back in the fourth quarter. Our girls did a great job of making plays at the end.”
Lauren DeGooyer had a solid all-around game for the Lightning, totaling seven points, eight rebounds and seven steals.
Molly Calhoun had 15 points, and Hahn added 12 points and five steals before her injury to lead Riverside Christian (3-3, 14-6), which plays White Swan in its district opener.
