Small schools on the chopping block???
Thread Created On 2/12/2009 3:03:00 AM

Gregoire is considering the consolidation of 50 schools in our state with K-12 enrollments of under 150 students. How will this affect the 1B Ranks???

That could affect most B schools period. There are only 21 B schools with over 150 enrollment. Here's a link to WIAA 09-10 enrollment figures. http://www.wiaa.com/classification/schools08-10.aspx

The 150 is for grades K-12. All 2B schools would have a lot higher enrollment than that and a lot of the 1Bs would too.

I love the conviction from our Guv and Legislature in tackling this economic downturn particularly given the fact that they squandered the "rainy day fund" (wasn't that set up for just this type of economic environment?) AND spent us into the red.

Small schools, good education, people who care teach the kids, safer enviroment. or Put teachers out of work in a bad economic times, hurt small towns, more travel for students, higher transportation cost, local taxes go
somewhere else. Seems like the right thing to do if your Gregoire!
Home school anyone! What idiots

Gold Ball, you do have some good points but there are two sides to every story.

There are a lot of states that consolidate.

To try to explain if WA was like the state I grew up in it would be something like this in SW WA.

Menlo, SB, and Raymond would be one school. PeEll would either bus there or Chehalis.

Adna and Napavine would bus into Chehalis.

Winlock, Toledo, and Onalaska would be one school.

WP, Mossyrock, and Morton would be one school.

when we first moved here not knowing anything else we thought it was strange that every little town had their own school.

Just a different perspective to throw out there.

A few years back, my wife and I took a drive through the SW. We were surprised to find towns and schools so close. Not always the case in eastern WA...in fact rare.

The answer to the original question: it would eliminate all three schools in the Sprague-Harrington-Lamont 1B sports co-op. 30 miles between the towns on either end...much further than that to the edge of the districts.

Lets look at it this way Pirate Ball. The Gov. can not manage OUR money, but they are going to come in to OUR towns and shut some of OUR schools down to save some of OUR money. I am sort of a free market kind of guy. Let OUR local school communities decide when we need to close OUR school. We can do
alot better job managing OUR local schools, than the Government can.
And by the way do not look at paying any less in taxes when they shut YOUR school down. Other people
will be voting out side of your town as to how much your going to pay in taxes to support the school in there town. We need to wake up and start voting for better people to run OUR government on both sides of the isle instead of voting for polititions who have proven they can not!

I know in Illinois, where my mom is from, the small towns do a lot of consolidating too. So much so that in the case of football, where schools that aren't necessarily combined otherwise still have co-ops a la Tekoa-Oakesdale, the smallest football program, enrollment wise, runs at about 150 kids for four grades. But then again the towns in Illinois are much closer together than are many in Washington, especially Eastern Washington. I'm not sure Queen Christine realizes, for instance, that tiny towns like Bickleton and Skykomish are almost 30 miles from the nearest town with a school. To say nothing of North River.

if this happens, our small town (clallam bay) would probably be done. our school employes alot of the families with kids in school. i could see most of them moving if the school was closed.

Klickitat County has eight high schools. I believe five of them fall under the 150 student line...Klickitat, Trout Lake, Glenwood, Wishram, and Bickleton.

A word from the conspiracy theorist here. City people and politicians are jealous of the life we have here in the country, and they would like nothing better than to do away with our schools, which generally means the end of our towns too.

Have you ever met more than one or two politicians(at the most) that you can trust?

We just keep electing the same ol', same ol' politicians because us country folks just don't have the voting power to control our state.

Just the thoughts of a hick........

Thank God Tri-Cities Prep (and other "B" non "government" schools) are not beholden to the (p)maternalistic "largess" of the state. What is given to one - is easily taken. Most private schools - as well as most home school programs, are funded entirely by private individuals - no church, diocese - or more importantly STATE (even though all of these parents still pay property taxes to support "government education" (not public- if it was public - we'd actually have a say). These schools live or die on the largess of the donors and supporters (after taxes!) - not the whims or mis-management of our exceedingly "well run" government. No worries here. At least none that you'll hear about.

Here are some links that have research that discusses the issues involving small school consolidation.
