Sad day for any Basketball fan with the passing of the greatest basketball coach of all time. Coach Wooden died today at the age of 99.

"Mr. Wooden was a mild-mannered leader who molded an athletic dynasty at the University of California at Los Angeles by instilling a quiet discipline in his players, emphasizing group effort over individual heroics. His favorite part of coaching was leading the practice sessions in which he taught the fundamentals that were the foundation of his success."

Just to say he was the greatest basketball coach of all time is a gross understatement. He didn't just teach basketball, he used basketball to teach life and how one should go about it. So many teaching moments... When Walton refused to cut his hair on principle and Wooden said that he respected people who take a strong stand for their principles and "and Bill we're going to miss you"... The way he started each year's first practice with a lesson on putting on socks that taught so much more than how to put on socks, from the importance of the indivual's well being to the team to doing even the smallest of things the right way... to...well there's thousands.

A sad day, the world just isn't a nice a place this morning.

A sad day indeed. Their are untold numbers of stories about his honesty, integrity, and that rules are rules...an area I think is lost on a lot of kids these days. One comes to mind this morning.
Bill Walton didn't want to cut his long red curly hair and he believed that was his right living our country. Coach Wooden told Walton that he respected his beliefs and respected his right to make that choice....and in the next sentence Coach Wooden said "we sure are going to miss you Bill."

i can't begin to communicate the number of times i used coach wooden, through sayings and x's and o's, during the years i coached.  to me, he was the master.  i feel a huge sense of loss today.  he was such a huge part of basketball.  he will be missed immensly.  it is interesting to listen to his former players talk of him.  now, who will be the next john wooden.  is there anybody out there who will fill the void?

Nobody can replace Wooden...I remember hearing about the socks story.  Wooden was a teacher before he was a coach.

my favorite coach wooden story:   wooden had a team rule...no facial hair.  bill walton felt the rule unjust and challenged coach.  wooden told walton in a calm voice (almost made walton feel the beard waas no issue) he could keep the beard if wanted.......but...the team would miss him.  walton shaved the beard.

R.I.P. Coach,

One of my all time idols.

Here's a small clip from the documentary "The UCLA Dynasty"

If you ever get a chance to watch it I highly recommend it.

Some of my favorite Wooden quotes:

Ability is a poor man's wealth.

Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.

If you're not making mistakes, then you're not doing anything.

The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team.

Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.

You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.

Sports do not build character. They reveal it.
