Who provided solutions or THE solution?

Ultimately whatever happens will be a compromise and therefore the continued subject of complaint, er debate.

Is that an article or editorial? Not that it matters, just curious. I like the fact that Colbrese admitted that he botched communication with the masses and that he appears to understand that B basketball is about communities and not just schools. And I very much liked the author calling out those who believe the sky is falling and that irreparable damage to the B tourney has been done. What I didn't like is that the article/editorial really didn't help or attempt to direct future discussions other than to say, be nice, be civil and good luck.

I didn't say there were any solutions.. Just ideas being thrown around but more grumbles than anything else.  A solution I do remember is combining the two regionals into one site on each side of the mountain for each classification.  That maybe one of the only ones I can think of that was a solid solution.

I think the two sites for four regionals is a horrible idea! Sure you get to have girls and guys play at the same venue while allowing SOME crossover but look what it does to travel for the schools and parents. In today's economy and with no one wanting to support any increase in school funding the priorities should be to keep boys and girls from the same schools together AND minimize expenses to the schools and parents. Everyone 2B and 1B in Eastern Washington is with in normal away game driving distance of Spokane (or Cheney), same with a central location for the rest of the regions with a higher quality venue (Wenatchee, Olympia, Bellingham). Eastern, Western, Central and there has to be something in Olympia or that area with a higher quality facility than a high school gym. Cost; tickets, a tank of gas and combo meal or say under $100.

Yes yes YES there will be complaints.... let me rephrase: WHINES, bi***s, tears of sorrow and outrage that someone’s Jenny or Johnny got left home that was "better" than someone else. Boo hoo, IF you don't beat the team in front of you you haven't earned anything. Now take the 1B girls, there was no doubt about it at least 10 or 15 eastside teams left home that were better than what the westies sent but the westies DESERVED to be at the finals and those other 10 or 15 teams did not. Why? Because they beat who they needed to beat and those that were left home didn’t. Seriously, if you aren’t one of the best in your region why should you get a shot at being the best in the state?

I didn't say it was a good idea or a bad idea..  I said it was a solution that was thrown out there..

I didn't take it that you were specifically supporting the idea and that wasn't aimed at you my good fellow. I just don't get the idea of having regionals to save money and missed school and then doing these types of patches on a fundamentally flawed framework. There’s a time to tweak something and there’s a time to say, ‘Dam the river we botch this up, back to the drawing board’. Now, if you recall I was a supporter of a regional system but the current ‘solution’ doesn’t need an adjustment it needs a re-boot.

Gotcha..  Shoe fits wear it..

I too like the Regional format.  Tweak it a bit and you will have a good product.  I also agree that the teams that are there did what it took to get there.  Some may have easier routes but they still won the games that it took to get there..

Might be too expensive but: Saint Martins University Marcus Pavillion

"Gotcha..  Shoe fits wear it.."

I have such a big mouth for much the same reason gorillas have big nostrils, they have big fingers and I have big feet....

Now, I don't have an issue with someone pointing out that they think they're better than someone who made it or that IF they'd made it they'd have done such and such. That's discussion of opinion and not unjust deserts. I don't have any qualms about saying that in my opinion the Colfax girls were one of the best eight or six teams in 2B, but note that I have not nor would I say that because of that they deserved something they did not win or were ripped off by not making the state finals. And I was among the first to laugh at the poor basketball played at state by the Westside 1B girls. But there's a difference between that stuff than saying the system slighted you or that it should have been you instead of them.

Major Issues:

Cost of Tickets
Teams in different locations
Travel costs
Venues

Please add your issues so I can add them to my list.  Going to start a possible solution for each.

Major Issues:

Cost of Tickets

Possible Solution – Create a Tournament pass that goes on sale at the start of the school year that allows you access into all state tournament.  $30 per tournament (average so say 4 possible tournaments visited - $120) make the pass $95.  All state events (regionals are state events) are included with this pass.

Teams in different locations – There is no real solution to this outside of the point of bringing two regions into one location but with the little crossovers across the state in all classifications, this will never be eliminated completely.

Travel costs – The format that they voted on is the format that had the least amount of travel.  There will be travel once you get to this level of play.

Venues – I believe the venues used were ideal for a tournament called “regional’s”.  It isn’t for something called the “first round of State”. It is a perspective outlook from many fans and viewers. I do not believe that Districts should have to change their venues or schedules to accommodate “regionals” and vice versa.  They are two separate entities and it will happen. Heck in the bigger classification there was a team that played their “first round of state game” on their home floor.

Yes there is; don't cross over regions. Each region sends their best two to the finals. Why call them regionals if they aren't defined by regions? Heck, if you're going to have four at two venues then why not just have two at two venues? That would accomplish greater "leveling" of better teams staying home than having to sit there and watch an inferior team go to state because you're in the one with the Reardan and Brewster girls or NWCc and LR boys while the next game from the different "regional" is a winner to state loser out with a team you beat in your own district tournament advancing.

And a #1 seed should never have to travel to a different region. Seriously,  Reardan girls travels to face Brewster for a single #1 seed while an inferior team earns a #1 in Reardan’s physical region? That is IF you’re looking to seed by quality.

Define regions??

You have to cross over regions or change the allocation formula..

I do agree that the #1's should not have to travel..

St Martin's used to host the 1A district tourney a long time ago.
Seemed to be a pretty good venue from what I remember.
The UPS field house was also used and hosted the
state tourney a few times back in the day. I'm sure money
is an issue in both of these cases however.

I didn't like the idea that a team could lose in their first "State" game and still win the state championship.  They don't give the volleyball or softball teams the same chance, even though they have similar tournaments.  I guess if they change the name of the first round to Regionals, that would be a little different.  I might be in a minority on this though.
