Witching Hour in Winlock: Cardinals Kick Off 2012 Football Season With Midnight Practice

WINLOCK — A rolling fog gave Robert F. Johnson Memorial Field in Winlock an eerie feeling on Wednesday morning. The coyotes howling in the background didn't help either.

But that couldn’t stop the Winlock football team — their helmets covered in condensation from the misty conditions — from getting an early start to the season.

How many schools got an early jump with a Midnight Practice? Better watch out for the mighty Cardinals and their new head coach. I am sure Mike Honcho is swelling with pride for his Alma Mater.

TOR does the 5:30 am practice because of harvest.

Up at 4:30 catch the bus at 5. Get done with practice and then most of the upper classmen and some of the the younger kids go and drive truck or combine for harvest. Back home between 9 and 10 pm, go to bed and do it again.

I'm sure other teams to the same thing in D9 and D7.

Practice at midnight........................that's just crazy.

And private schools were at those January practices scouting (recruiting?).

R&R, Any news from your neighbor to the south? Is coach Alton going to get the kids he needs to turn out so they will be competitive. They have been pretty competitive in Jr high but just don't turn out in High School. Anyway, good luck to Coach Alton.

OC - Ocosta's numbers are going to be thin again this year. They graduated 6 or 7 seniors, Hellman, Todd & Carter among them. OJH only had 4 or 5 8th graders last year (when we played them), so I don't know that they will have more than 17 or 18 suited up by week one, with very few seniors. I wish Coach Allton the best of luck and I know he'll have the Wildcats ready for the North Beach rivalry game on 10/25.

Probably no JV games then, too bad, we have 32 kids abd will be looking for games for the younger kids.

I heard that everyone living in the entire rural area of Adnoid hit the weights and pavement harder than ever before this summer.

Not just the players, but EVERYONE. They all met at the local Grange and began their community workout in preparation for the upcoming football season.

Ultra-Mag pushed them so hard, they lost 5 elders of the community to dehydration and heat exhaustion. They were so dedicated, they didn't have time to hold a funeral. UM just pushed their carcasses into the roadside ditch.

Are you ready for football season? Adnoid thinks so....

Ah, it feels so nice for this season to be back again. While the rest of the world sits back with some popcorn and a pop, the D4 banter begins...(Honch scores 10 bsports virtual points for starting the festivities)

How many kids have turned out for Adnoid football this year?

I was hearing the entire school turned out... boys, girls, teachers, UM, some kids from WF West.... Just trying to get the facts

Enough to keep our 9 year playoff streak alive ( one being in the A's ) in the toughest league in the state.

BTW- the record is 11 set by DeSales...

Don't know much about Adna but I know they've got some athletes they gave our kids a good go on the basketball court this summer.

Interesting to listen to some folks around the area and listen to their thoughts of how the league is in a "down" year, yet 3 out of the top 5 in the preseason rankings are out of the central league.. Yet I hear how much improved Pell and Winlock should be this year because of fact they have been young the last couple years and that they should give some teams a run for their money. I do know Ony will be improved as well because of their youth is now one year older. As I see it just from listening to all the folks it could be a wild ride to see how all this shakes down.. I"m so ready for the games to begin..
