Programming Tips For Webcasters
Every successful broadcast requires preparation and programming, here are some tips to get you started
on making great broadcasts.
1.) When broadcasting a sporting event, educate yourself on the players involved beforehand. Having a list of the players
and their numbers or designations is very helpful. When broadcasting
a non-sporting event, try to have as much information available in front
of you before you start.
2.) If you plan to play music, have an idea of what songs will be played at what times during the broadcast.
3.) Depending on the situation, it would be a good idea to have a plan for a pre-event and post-event show to introduce and recap your event.
4.) If possible, try and find companies or organizations to
advertise on your webcasts. This option is a very good idea because it will allow you to
offset the cost of the broadcast, if not make a profit. In addition,
commercials often add a certain credibility to your webcasts.
5.) Have any announcements or advertisements written down
beforehand so you can read them whenever there is an intermission.
6.) Have someone with a computer set up,
or use your own computer, to listen to your broadcast before you start so you can listen to the volume and other settings that you may have to change during the broadcast.
7.) Have more than one person broadcasting if possible. It adds variety to the
webcast.
8.) Get the word out about your broadcasts, word travels fast and you never know how fast your audience may
grow!
9.) Offer a station-identification piece or
mention your station identifier (name of your broadcast team, station, or
company, for example, "You're listening to Meridix
Online!"). This will increase awareness of your particular
stream to your listeners, and they are more likely to remember and return
to your station.
10.) If you plan to have copyrighted music played, we recommend getting legal clearance to play these songs. Uncopyrighted or live music is not a problem, but mp3s and CD’s could
eventually be. Also, do not rebroadcast or retransmit any
television, radio, pay per view, performances, or other programming to
which you do not have permission. Be careful.
