CHAMPLIN PARK, Minnesota - With chilling temperatures, a muddy field, and spotty precipitation, it made sense for Champlin Park to rely heavily on their horse, Brandon Marquart. That's exactly what they did, handing him the ball 31 times, tallying 191 yards and three touchdowns. That's typically a recipe for success, but with two touchdowns in the final minute, Andover was able to spoil homecoming for Champlin Park and a sterling effort from Marquart.
After a scoreless first quarter, Andover took an early 7-0 lead on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Finnes to Zach Nelson. Champlin Park answered back early in the second half with a touchdown of their own, with Marquart scoring from five yards out to bring the score to 7-6. Champlin Park missed the extra point, and this would prove to be a key theme as they'd miss all three extra points on the evening.
Marquart added his second touchdown on a replica of his first touchdown, from five yards out, to make the score 12-7. He wasn't finished, though, and added a third and final touchdown, this time a 66-yard gallop with 4:31 remaining in the game that appeared to put the contest out of reach at 18-7.
Finnes and company had other plans though, and they drove down the field, scoring on an odd play that resulted in a fumble recovery touchdown for Andover with 58 seconds remaining. Andover then perfectly executed an onside kick, taking possession near midfield before driving downfield. With time expiring, quarterback Tyler Finnes threw an incomplete pass and the Champlin Park players stormed the field. They had won their homecoming game, or so they thought. Referees sent each team back to their respective sidelines, and said that one second must be put back on the scoreboard. Finnes took the snap out of shotgun, rolled out right, and with beautiful protection from his offensive line found Chase Vasquez in the back of the end zone to win the game for Andover. The Andover players stormed the field, much like Champlin Park had done moments before, while Champlin Park players stood stunned and silent, shaking hands with Andover before retreating to their sideline dejectedly for their post-game meeting.
Marquart added three receptions for 51 yards, and fullback Wicklander had six carries for 31 yards for Champlin Park.
On the Andover side, Finnes complete 26 of 45 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns, and ran 15 times for 33 yards as well. Beeskow paced the team in rushing with 13 carries and 63 yards, and Jason Schneider caught 11 passes for 110 yards.
Andover improved to 5-0 with the victory; Champlin Park fell to 3-2 with the loss.
