AMES, IA - It turned out to be a very abnormal weekend for the Kansas City Stars JV squad during the Midwest High School Hockey League playoffs. After giving up only 47 goals in 32 games in the regular season - less than 1.5 goals a game - the Stars lost Saturday to the Des Moines Oak Leafs, giving up 6 goals in a single game. Amazingly, the Stars had not given up more than 6 goals in any TWO consecutive games before that.

On Sunday, playing for third, the Stars put in a much better effort, but still came up on the short end of the stick, suffering their first consecutive loss of the season, dropping a 3-2 shootout loss to the Des Moines Capitals.

Twice the Stars had a one goal lead as Tim Ediger tapped a back door pass in to the Capitals net to start off the scoring in the first before Des Moines tied it late. Logan Lopicka scored in his second straight game to give the Stars back their one goal lead in the second and the teams hit the locker room with the Stars up 2-1.

Kansas City had been the better team up until then, but had only the one goal lead to show for it. The Capitals had a stronger third period and tied the game with about 10 minutes to play. The game remained tied through the third, forcing a shootout to determine a winner (no overtime in non-championship JV games in the MHSHL). The first two Capitals scored in the shootout and only one Stars player found the back of the net, giving the Capitals the shootout win and third place in the tournament, with the Stars settling for fourth.

Kansas City can still keep their heads up with a regular season championship and a playoff on which to build next season.
