FOREST LAKE, Minnesota - In front of a large crowd on Homecoming the Forest Lake Rangers earned their first win of the season Friday night, defeating the White Bear Lake Bears 19-13. Entering the game, Forest Lake was looking for not only their first win of the season, but also looking for their first win over the Bears in 15 years.
Things started quickly for the Rangers. After receiving the opening kickoff, Forest Lake drove 77 yards in 7 plays to jump to a 7-0 lead. The drive was finished by a 20 yard run by sophomore Glen Miron. Miron ran twice for 40 yards in the drive.
After trading punts, Forest Lake drove again. Again, the drive ended in a Glen Miron touchdown run, this one from 11 yards out and Forest Lake led 13-0. It was a lead that was quickly cut into by White Bear Lake.
The Bears were forced to punt after three plays in their first two possessions. It took only one play for White Bear to get on the board with their third possession. Senior Matt Glasgow found a seem on the right side and outran the defense for a 68 yard touchdown run that cut the lead to 13-6. That was the lead that Forest Lake took into halftime as neither team could mount any sustained offensive momentum in the second quarter.
White Bear took the second half kickoff and produced the game's and maybe the season's most impressive drive. Starting from their own 19 yard line, the Bears methodically drove down the field and held the ball for 10:18 before junior Joe Nasvik plunged in from 1 yard out. The score would remain tied at 13-13 until late in the 4th quarter.
Junior QB C.J. Franklin capped the winning scoring drive by sneaking in from a yard out with 3:29 left. The winning drive was helped along by a pass interference call that moved the ball to the White Bear 16 yard line instead of Forest Lake having to try a 4th down play from the White Bear 31 yard line.
The Rangers improved to 1-4 on the season and will travel to Hastings next week. With the loss, White Bear Lake drops to 2-3. The Bears have a home game against undefeated Mounds View on tap next Friday.
Players of the game:
White Bear Lake - RB Matt Glasgow, 11 rushes for 95 yards including a 68 yard TD run.
