MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota - The De La Salle Islanders defeated the Breck Mustangs 42-21. The game marked homecoming for the Islanders. The game was much closer throughout than the final score would indidcate.
Breck wasted no time, taking the opening kick-off, and quickly went 84 yards for a touchdown. They used quick, short and precise passes with the drive culminating in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Austin Lommen to Tyler Hudson.
Then Reggie Gandy and the Islanders offense then got things rolling. They put together a long sustained drive that totaled 90 yards, 13 plays as Gandy capped it off with a 5-yard scamper.
The 2nd quarter belonged to the Islanders. Gandy scored his second touchdown of the day on a 65-yard run showing a mix of speed and power. Gandy quickly added another second quarter touchdown on a 13-yard run, giving the Islanders a 21-7 lead going into the half.
Breck got their offense moving again in the second half. Lommen hit Hudson on a post route and he was able to outrun the defensive backs to the endzone. That score brought Breck to within a touchdown at 21-14.
De La Salle answered promptly taking the ensuing drive 68 yards ending in a Tyler Harper 8 yard touchdown run. That gave the Islander a 28-14 lead just into the fourth quarter and they never looked back. The defense intercepted a Lommen pass on the next drive and one play later turned that into 7 points when Harper connected with Ross Barker on a 53-yard touchdown. Reggie Gandy went on to add a fourth touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
Austin Lommen also added a third touchdown pass when he found Kasey Robinson on an 18-yard pass.
Reggie Gandy finshed with 37 carries for 412 yards and 4 touchdowns. He was voted MSBN's player of the game for De La Salle. Lommen's favorite target on the day, Kasey Robinson, took home that honor for Breck.
Both teams are now 4-1 on the season.
