ROME, New York - By Big Blue Mike Bilinski-Week Two Game Capsules

Well sports fans it looks like another great weekend of high school football is upon us. Get out there and enjoy some great local football and support your community.

Class AA

RFA 0-1 @ CNS 0-1

The Black Knights of RFA look to get back on track when they take on the CNS North stars. Last week the North stars fell to Central Square in a shoot out 33 to 27.

The North Stars were led by QB Corey Scanlon who passed to Xavier Brown for scores of 14, 11, and 10 yards. Scanlon also rushed for 108 yards in the loss.

The Black Knights only score came on a second quarter 27 yard run by Nicolas Cheri. If RFA hope to win this week they must pick it up on the offensive side of the ball.

On defense they have to put pressure on Scanlon and keep him in the pocket. Both will be tough tasks for the Knights who struggled in week one.

F-M 0-1 @ Utica Proctor 1-0.

The Raiders fresh off their win over Corcoran take on the F-M Hornets. The Hornets dropped their opener to Section IV Power Corning 62 to 50 in a shoot out.

F-M QB Wolfgang Shafer passed for three scores and running backs Sean Bright and Andrew Fletcher each had two rushing touchdowns.

The Raiders were led by their Sr. QB Jordan Treen who ran for a score and passed to Chris Simmons for another in the win.

The Hornets have a lot of fire power on offense so the Raiders must pick it up on the defensive side of the ball if they hope to stay in the game this week and come away with another win.

This game has the potential to be a real shoot out and could come down to who has the ball last.

Class A

Whitesboro 1-0 @ Cortland 1-0

Two early season contenders meet this week as the Whitesboro Warriors travel west to take on the Cortland Purple Tigers. The Tigers started their season with a big 70-40 win over Fulton.

QB Devon Darrow threw for two scores and rushed for three in the win. Running back Jonathan Prior was also a standout for the Tigers with five touchdown runs.

The Warriors are coming off a huge win over Indian River. QB Adam Eberly threw for a score and ran back an interception for another in the win.

Running back Steve Almond also added three scores on the ground for the Warriors. Cortland certainly has the firepower to put the points on the board this season but will face a much faster and more physical team in Whitesboro this week.

If the Warriors control the line of scrimmage and out muscle the Tigers look for the Warriors to put another W in the win column.

New Hartford 0-1@ J-D 1-0

The New Hartford Spartans look to turn things around after a week one loss when they travel to Jamesville- Dewitt. The Red Rams started the season with a 41-6 win over Fowler. QB Eric Thompson ran for three scores and passed for another to lead the Rams.

The Spartans stumbled out of the blocks with a 28-18 loss to Carthage. Running back Derek German caught a touchdown pass from Steve Tomaino and ran for another in the loss.

If New Hartford hopes to get in the win column they need to get to Thompson early and often. They also need to shore up their defense that gave up scores on runs of 68, 64, and 55 yards.

The Spartans need to see if they can turn it up on offense and stay home on defense they can turn it around this week.

Class B

Camden 1-0 @ Ilion 0-1-MHTS Friday Nigh Lights-Game of the Week

The Camden Blue Devils stared out their stay in Class B with a 19-8 win over Oneida. QB Colby Stratton ran for a score and threw for another in the win.

The Golden Bombers entry into Class B was not as successful as they fell to VVS 37-24. Running back Travis Murray rushed for two scores and QB Tyler Brian hit Alex Joy on a 49 yard strike to pace the Bombers.

Ilion must control the line of scrimmage and keep the ball away from Stratton. With the double wing offense if they fall behind as they did in week one it will be very tough for them to catch a fast Camden squad.

The Blue Devils must dig in on defense and not let Ilion get control of the line of scrimmage or they may not have enough time for their offense to score. This sets up as an interesting match-up.

Oneida 0-1 @ Cazenovia 1-0

The Indians again take on a tough opponent as they travel to Cazenovia to take on the always tough Lakers. Cazenovia started the season with a 41-22 win over south Jefferson. Running back Andrew Vogl and Darian Smith each rushed for two scores in the Lakers win.

The Indians dropped a tough one to the Camden Blue Devils 19-8 their only score coming from a late one yard Brian Worley run.

If Oneida hopes to hang with the Lakers they need to pick it up on offense this week. Playing the Blue Devils tough on defense was a plus for the Indians but as they say if you can’t score you can’t win.

VVS 1-0 @ H-P 0-1

The Red Devils hope to make it 2-0 as they take on the Golden Knights of Holland Patent. VVS started the 2011 season with a win over Ilion.

Speed back Matt Sliker burned the Bombers on two punt returns for touchdowns of 57 yards a piece. He also added a 7 yard run. H-P fell to Mexico 57 to 22 week one. QB Chris Parshall threw for two scores and ran for another in the loss.

If the Knights hope to say with the Red Devils they need to step up on defense. The Knights gave up four touchdown runs of more than 20 yards, three over 50.

Look for VVS to get the ball to Sliker early and often and if they are as successful as they were in week one may come away with the win.

Class C

Herkimer 1-0 @ Notre Dame/RCH 1-0

It may be only week two but the Class C East title could be on the line as Herkimer takes on ND/RCH. The Magicians started the season with a big 42-0 win over Adirondack.

QB Sean Crandall threw for two scores ran for another and returned an interception 20 yards for another in the win.

The Jugglers also were successful in week one with a 19-0 win over Canastota. Running back Colin Hulser ran for a score and caught another from QB Colin Pastorella in the win.

This game could come down to who holds onto the football. Both teams have excellent size and speed at the skill positions.

Turnovers again may be the key as to who pulls out the win in this evenly matched early season battle.

Little Falls 0-1 @ Frankfort Schuyler 1-0

The Mounties look to rebound from a tough loss to Mt. Markham in week one. However, things don’t seem to get a lot easier for them this week as they take on a tough F-S team.

Last Week Little Falls lost to the Mustangs 33-20. Running back John LaPerla rushed for a solid 168 yards and a score in the loss.

The Knights used some late game heroics to pull out a tough 28-21 win over S-E. After falling behind early, the Knights fought back led by QB John Gatto who threw two touchdown passes to Vinny Fumarola as Gerald Post added a touchdown run on the ground and returned a kickoff 85 yards for another score.

If the Knights get on the board quickly it could be a long night for the Mounties. However, if Little Falls can keep it close they could sneak out a win late in the game.

Mt. Markham 1-0 @ M-E/Hamilton 1-0

Two surprising teams that started out of the gate quickly this season are M-M and ME-Hamilton. The Mustangs got a solid win over Little Falls. Running back Cody Evens rushed for three scores to lead M-M.

The combined team of former rival M-E and Hamilton came away with their first win in their short one game history a 20-16 victory over Clinton.

After falling behind early the M-E Ham team rallied with two second half scores and shutdown the Warrior offense in the second half.

This week, if M-E/Hamilton can get their offense in gear early and again play solid defense they could roll. However, if Evens is allowed too many touches the Mustangs might have too much firepower for the Warriors.

Canastota 0-1 @ Sauquoit Valley 0-1

The Raiders from Canastota hung with a tough ND team Friday night and look to turn things around quickly as they travel to Sauquoit.

The Indians lost to Section II’s Mechanicville 22-6. Their early score by Dylan English was not enough for the Indians who were outscored the rest of the game.

This game is an important league contest in the C South and the team that controls time of possession will win

Clinton 0-1 @ S-E 0-1

The Warriors look to recover from a tough week one loss to M-E/Hamilton. With two defensive touchdown in their week one loss the Warriors look to improve on offense quickly this week.

That may be a tough task as the S-E Marauders look to bounce back quickly to a loss to F-S they believe they let slip away. Running back Austin Japer scored two first quarter touchdowns one through the air from QB Randy Briggs and one on the ground.

However, two late fourth quarter touchdowns by F-S did them in. Look for the Marauders to get back on track in this one as they used their big offensive line to control the line of scrimmage.

Class D

West Canada 1-0 @ Westmoreland 1-0

Even though this is week two, a pivotal match-up takes place this weekend in the D East as undefeated West Canada takes on undefeated Westmoreland.

The Indians started the season with a big 55-6 win over Mohawk. Fullback Pat Edwards ran for three scores and 169 yards to lead WCV.

The bulldogs were equally successful as they rolled over Waterville 42-6. QB Zack Green and running back Hassan Griffith each scored twice in the win. Both teams are physical upfront.

West Canada will look to spread the field and use their size to wear down the Bulldogs. Westmoreland will look to confuse the Indians with their option attack.

This has the potential to be a great game as both teams have size and the skill players to put points on the board. It is the team that is the most consistent on defense that will win. This game could go either way.

Waterville 0-1 @ Dolgeville 1-0

The Waterville Indians had hoped to be going into Dolgeville 1-0 after week one. However, after a tough week one loss to Westmoreland things got no easier for the Indians.

The Blue Devils started their season with a big 49-14 win over N.Y. Mills.

After giving up an early score the Blue Devils settled down. Running back Ray Ruggerio rushed for three touchdowns and 259 yards on just 9 carries and running back Jared Frederick added two more scores to pace the Blue Devils.

This could be a tough week two for the Indians as Dolgeville is a very tough place to play.

N.Y. Mills 0-1 @ Oriskany 1-0

Two longtime rivals meet in week two as the N.Y. Mills Marauders travel to Oriskany to take on the Redskins. The Mills started out the year with a tough 49-14 loss to Dolgeville. Both Addison Wolanin and Fedor Avrusevich had solid games for the Marauders.

The Redskins stared out their season under new head coach Jerry Tine with a 20-14 win over Cooperstown.

QB Austin Smith led the way for the Redskins throwing for three scores and 245 yards. You can throw out the stats when these two rivals meet.

This game could go either way as the Redskins look to stay undefeated and the Mills looks to enter the win Column in the tough D East.

Cooperstown 0-1 @ Mohawk 0-1

Two teams that look to improve quickly to stay in the tough D East playoff race are Cooperstown and Mohawk. The Redskins lost a close one to Oriskany week one.

Johnny on the spot Jacob Miller recovered two fumbles for the Redskins which gave them their only points.

The Mohicans were pushed around by West Canada as their only score came on a 25 yard scramble by QB Carson Murphy. The team that finds its offensive groove first will be the winner in this one.

Well sports fans I have stopped building my ark as the weatherman says it will be a beautiful weekend for football. Get out there and support your local team and enjoy some great early season football.
