ATLANTA, GA - The High School football action is in full swing across the state and the region. Here's a look at some this weekends action and scores.
Stephenson defeated Tift County 35-21. Mike Davis of Stephenson(3-0) rushed 24 times for 232 yards and 4 touchdowns. Demarcus Sweat returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown. Tadric Jackson, a sophomore quarterback, had 205 yards passing for Tift County (3-1).
ML King (2-1) didn't look sharp most of the night, especially in the special teams department but was still able to outlast visiting Collins Hill 31-14. Collins Hill (1-2) had several possessions deep in ML King territory in the first half yet failed to cash them in because of turnovers. Collins Hill also setup ML Kings first two touchdown with bad snaps sailing over the head of the punter. ML King used the prime field position to their advantage as Jonquel Dawson hooked up with Blake Tibbs on touchdown passes of 40 and 5 yards both time. Running back Jamonde Hunter raced 64 yards for a touchdown and Toronto Thomas picked off a pass and returned it 87 yards for a touchdown to give ML King a 24-7 lead at halftime. Collins Hill lone first half score was a 34-yard touchdown pass from Bradley Jordan to Nick England.
Collins Hills also got a second half touchdown from running back Jordan Parker who finished with 176 yards rushing on the night. Jamonde Hunter finished with 150 yards rushing on 22 totes and capped it off with a 9-yard touchdown run with under a minute remaining in the game for ML King. ML King is now 2-0 this season with both wins coming over Gwinnett County schools and will host Westlake next week as they enter Region 2-5A play. Collins Hills (1-2) will enter Region 7-5A play when they host North Gwinnett(2-1) next week.
The Duluth football program is maturing before our eyes under the leadership of second-year head coach Corey Jarvis. Duluth was seeking their third consecutive win and first 3-0 start in a very long time. However it was not meant to be as the Wildcats fell 43-41 in three overtimes to the Raiders from Alpharetta (2-1). Alpharetta has defeated Duluth (2-1) two consecutive seasons.
Buford (3-0) defeated Yulee (FL) 49-7. Yulee running back Derrick Henry and Georgia signee had 121 yards rushing and a 76-yard touchdown run. Buford had 429 yards total offense with 254 rushing and 175 via the air force. The Wolves had fifteen different ball carriers and six different receivers catch a pass.
Vanguard (FL) (1-1) defeated heavy favorite North Marion(FL) 8-2. Deltron Modican scored on a 1-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to hand North Marion (1-1)their first loss of the season. Vanguard with the help of mother nature held North Marion to only 54 yards passing. The game was played in heavy rain most of the night. Carrollton (GA) defeated Vanguard 42-7 just one week earlier.
Bayside(FL) (0-2) traveled to Duncan,SC to face Byrnes (2-1) and were defeated 56-2. Brynes is 5-0 all time at home against Florida opponents. Byrnes running back Shakeem Wharton had a 73 yard touchdown run and finished with 155 yards rushing and four touchdown. Both of Byrnes victories in 2011 have been against non-South Carolina opponents. The Rebels will host state power and nationally ranked Gaffney (SC) next Friday night at home. Gaffney (4-0) defeated Union County 62-10 on Friday night.
