WAYZATA, Minnesota - It was a night where forecasters said the weather "felt like" 32 degrees. The wind was blowing, and there was a certain air of confidence brewing on the Edina sidelines...
The Edina defense set the stage by holding Wayzata to 3 and out on the Trojan opening drive. The hornets proceeded to score on their next 3 possessions. Sophomore kicker Patrick Le Corre booted one from 45 and another from 22 yards to put the Hornets up 6-0 with 2:20 left in the first quarter. The wind proved a major factor and virtually all scoring except 1 td was scored heading east. Wayzata then turned it over on downs and the Hornets started on their own 48 and 4 plays later found the end zone (heading west)on the legs of QB Mark Handberg who showed dexterity in movement as he dodged tacklers in the process (XP good by Le Corre). The score was 13-0 with 10:30 left in the half.
The Trojans, however, decided to get on their horses.
Wayzata put an impressive 13 play drive together, starting at their own 35. They stalled in the red zone on 3rd and goal from the 14 and settled for a Clay Elmore 31 yard field goal. The teams went to their half time locker rooms with Edina leading 13-3.
Wayzata came storming out in the 2nd half and pinned Edina down deep in their own end forcing a Hornet punt. The punt was blocked and a Wayzata player fell on it in the end zone giving the Trojans a quick touchdown to start the 3rd Quarter (XP good by Elmore). Wayzata was coming back from the 13 point deficit and only trailed 13-10 with 9:46 left in the 3rd.
Wayzata again forced the Hornets to punt, drove the field from their own 34 and missed a 31 yard FG to tie the game.
2 Edina possessions later, Wayzata again forced a punt and the Trojan return man Brett Classen had a nice run down to the Edina 1 yard line. QB Nick Olmanson punched it in for the score. Wayzata erased the 13-0 deficit and now led 17-13 (XP good by Elmore) with 8.6 seconds left in the 3rd Quarter.
Should we expect anything else when a #2 faces a #3 in state...
Each team then had the ball once and the opposing defenses held strong. Wayzata was in great shape after their punt pinned Edina down on their own 1 yard line still trailing in the 4th Quarter.
What happened next is the stuff athletes dream about.
Deep in their own end, 7:52 left in the game, and trailing by 4 - QB Handberg found a favorite target in Marley Allison on the left side, and Allison outraced coverage on his way to a 97 yard TD reception (XP good by Le Corre) and Edina jumped back into the lead 20-17.
An interception by Coleman Foley on Wayzata's next drive helped seal the victory.
