NEW ORLEANS, LA - A rivalry that has dated back through many years in prep football met for another classic battle tonight, and this time, Evangel finally got its revenge on the John Curtis Patriots. The Eagles rattled off 27 points to open the ballgame before Curtis could even sniff the end zone, earning themselves a trip to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and the Division I state title game.
It was a low-scoring first quarter, as Seth Green recorded the lone points in the opening frame with a 22-yard field goal, giving Evangel a 3-0 lead halfway through the first.
The Patriots kept the Eagles at bay for the remainder of the first quarter, but Connor Curry made them pay to open the second, unleashing an 80-yard bomb to Josh Walker that gave the Eagles a 10-0 lead. Curry wasn’t done in the first half, however, as he took one in himself from two yards away to push Evangel’s lead to 17-0 with 2:34 left to go in the second quarter.
The Eagles did not let up off the gas pedal in the third, as Green added another field goal, and Tamague Sloan finally found pay dirt from 15 yards out to make it 27-0 and officially put the dagger in John Curtis’ championship hopes.
The Patriots did finally crack the scoreboard with under a minute to play as quarterback Collin Guggenheim punched on in from 16 yards out, but it was too little too late.
Evangel and Curtis traded possessions in the fourth, mostly winding down clock and exchanging turnovers via a pair of interceptions, a fumbled return on a fair catch and a turnover on downs, which gave the Eagles all they needed to clinch a trip back to the Superdome for a chance at a Division I State Championship.
The Eagles will take on the winner of Scotlandville and Brother Martin, who played up in Baton Rouge tonight in the other Division I state semi-final matchup.
