Jewell Men's Tennis wins dual vs #24 Bethany on March 13, 2009.

 
LIBERTY, Missouri - The William Jewell men’s tennis team pulled off an upset of March Madness proportions by defeating the Bethany College Swedes 6-3 Friday at William Jewell. Bethany came into the match ranked #24th in the latest NAIA National Men’s poll. The Cardinals relied on strong doubles performances to go up 3-0 and then split the singles matches for the dual victory. This is the first time in over 10 years the men’s team has defeated a nationally ranked team.

“Our guys have worked so hard,” said Head Coach Paul Worstell. “We had some really close matches last weekend against ranked teams in Oklahoma Christian and Oklahoma Baptist. It felt good to finally get over that hump and for things to break our way.”

The Cardinals (5-2) will get a week to enjoy the victory as the team will take next week off for spring break. Once they return the season will heat up with conference play as the men and women will travel to Marshall, Mo., to take on Missouri Valley College on Friday, March 27 at 3:30 p.m.
