WAYZATA, Minnesota - The first-ranked Wayzata Trojans celebrated homecoming with a resounding 35-14 win over the fourth-ranked Hopkins Royals on a chilly and damp Friday night.
The Trojans lead 35-0 after three quarters of play thanks to good field position, accurate passing, solid running, and a defense that discombobulated the Hopkins offense. Wayzata had five drives that started in Royals territory and another that started at midfield due to a defense that allowed only 47 first-half yards. This season, the first-team offense has yet to allow a touchdown.
Junior quarterback Sasha Doran, the MSBN Player of the Game for Wayzata, was 11-16 throwing the football for 160 yards and three touchdowns, showing great accuracy on a soggy night. Running back Chris Kroeten finished with 107 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while Aaron Roth chipped in 42 yards on nine carries and threw for a touchdown. A.J. Tarpley was the recipient of the Roth pass, and Grant Olson, Adam Gooley, and A.J. Troup also made touchdown catches.
Hopkins was able to score twice in the fourth quarter, but the offense fell well short of the expectations set during their 4-0 start. The Royals are now 4-1 on the season and will host Armstrong on October 9. Wide Receiver Jonny Mydra was the MSBN Player of the Game for Hopkins after a 4 catch-77 yard performance that included a 59 yard touchdown pass. Wayzata moved to 5-0 on the season and will hit the road to face Lakeville North next Friday.
