PLYMOUTH, MN - Previously unbeaten in their last 20 games, including the Minnesota Class AAAAA State Championship Game last season, the Wayzata Trojans (7-1, 3-1 Classic Lake) cannot score on their overtime opportunity with the ball and fall to the Minnetonka Skippers (6-2, 3-1 Classic Lake) 3-0 in overtime. With the loss, the Trojans gave up sole possession of the Classic Lake Conference Championship and handed half of it to the Skippers.

In a game that was completely scoreless through 48 minutes of regulation play, it came down to overtime and finished with thrilling action on a night of constant light rain and chilly 35 degree temperatures. Neither team made it to the opposing 10-yard line before they had it there in overtime. A back and forth match between the 20's, included a combined 19 punts between the two teams and 7 turnovers.

In overtime, the Minnetonka Skippers got the ball first on the 10-yard line and couldn't punch it into the endzone on their first three downs. Head Coach Dave Nelson decided to then send Senior Kicker Zach Siemens out to try a 22-yard field goal on fourth down and the decision payed off as the kick was good for the first three points of the game. When Wayzata had their opportunity with the ball in overtime, they knew all it was going to take was a touchdown to get them a victory at home in Week 8. The Trojans ran the ball on their first two plays and were stuffed by a stout Skipper defense, that played tough all game against the #1 ranked team in the state.

At this point it was 3rd Down & 11 and Coach Dave Nelson for Minnetonka called a timeout and made sure that his defense was ready for what at the point, was the biggest play of the game for the Skippers. On the 3rd Down play, Wayzata Junior Quarterback Sasha Doran tried his first pass attempt of the overtime and lobbed the ball to the right side of the field into the endzone looking for wide receiver AJ Tarpley. The pass was on target, but Sophomore Strong Safety Charles Webb made a fantastic play on the ball and came down with an interception to seal the victory over the Trojans.

In Week 2, Wayzata defeated Minnetonka 28-0 in a non-conference match-up as both teams had a hole on their schedules and needed a local opponent. But this game was in conference, so the victory for Minnetonka put them even with Wayzata at 3-1 in the Classic Lake and gives them the share of the conference title. Wayzata will get a bye in the Section 5 Playoffs and take on the winner of Robbinsdale Armstrong and Osseo on Halloween afternoon. Minnetonka will wait until later this evening to find out who they will take on next Tuesday the 27th in the Section 6 Quarterfinals.

Players of the Game:
Wayzata - CB Jack Vettel - 1 interception and 1 fumble recovery
Minnetonka - SS Charles Webb - Game-ending interception in overtime to defeat #1 Wayzata
