WAPATO, WA - Beginnig with the 2012-2013 School Year, West Valley High School will join the Central Washington Athletic Conference. By coming on board with the CWAC, West Valley will be having a reunion with numerous rivals from the old Mid Valley Leauge.
Below is a copy of a press release from West Valley School District Superintendent Mike Brophy:
On October 24, 2012 the Board of Directors of the West Valley School District hosted a community forum prior to a school board meeting in order to gather community input around Washington Interscholastic Activities Association league membership. At that time, our enrollment numbers at West Valley High School would place us in the 2A Classification for competition from 2012 – 2014. There were a significant number of people who desired that West Valley "opt up" and play 3A competition, as well as a significant number who desired that West Valley play where its enrollment dictated, at the 2A level. After a great deal of discussion among school administrators and coaches at an earlier School Board Study Session, and later at the October 24, 2012 Community Forum, the Board of Directors recommended “opting up” to 3A competition.
Since that decision, there have been numerous concerns over how this would impact West Valley High School and West Valley student-athletes. Just recently it was determined that we would be placed in the 3A/4A North Division with West Valley (3A) joining Sunnyside (3A), Davis (4A), Eisenhower (4A), Wenatchee (4A), Eastmont (4A), and Moses Lake (4A). The South Division, made up of Walla Walla and the Tri-Cities 3A and 4A schools, would have an advantage of four 3A schools to our league’s two 3A schools which could negatively impact West Valley’s equal opportunity for playoffs or state tournament appearances. Based on this inequity, and our enrollment, our Board of Directors voted unanimously this morning to join the Central Washington Athletic Conference for the next two years. This is our local 2A Conference made up of many of West Valley’s old Mid Valley League rivals.
With the Quincy Jackrabbits going from the CWAC 2A down to 1A next year, and the addtion of West Valley the CWAC will remain at 10 teams.
