YAKIMA, WA - The Yakima Mavericks took their peferct 2-0 record on the road for the first time this season as they traveled to Spanaway to take on the South Sound Shockers. The Shockers came into the contest winless on the year at 0-2. Both teams were scoreless after 1 quarter of play. In particular the Mavericks appeared to need the first 15 minutes of the game to get their legs underneath them from the 3 1/2 hr trip from Yakima.
Yakima came alive in the 2nd quarter and actually lead the Shockers 14-6 at the half. The second half was all Mavericks! From the 2nd half kickoff that Yakima's Alex Mahre returned for an 85 yd touchdown, which went along with his 2 receiving touchdowns and 6 PATs, to an outstanding 5 TD performance by QB John Lobbasteal, 2 receiving TDs by Ryan Wright, a superb effort by the entire Mavericks defense, Yakima was hitting on all cylinders. In fact they scored 21 points in less than 4:30 gone by to open the 3rd quarter.
Yakima continued to roll and eventually just proved to be way too much for the South Sound Shockers to handle. As a result the Mavericks improve to 3-0 and next Saturday will once again travel back to the west side. That contest will feature the Yakima Mavericks at the South King Colts from Jet Stadium in Sumner.
Congratulations to the Pacific Northwest Sports Network/Eves Garden Player Of The Game.....Alex Mahre. With 3 TDs (2 rec and 1 KO Return....100+ yards.....and 6 PATs, Alex was definitely worth of this award. He makes the 3rd different player to receive this award in the first 3 weeks of the 2012 season. Congratulations Alex!
